Why Solar?

Why YOU should let solar work for YOU.

Clean, Quite and Reliable

Off grid systems are typically used at peoples cottages and remote locations where power isn’t avalible. In a lot of cases people are running their generators during meal times or during the night to power TV’s and other appliances. Installing a solar array with batteries allows for clean and most importantly, quiet energy through the day.

Don’t be a slave to your generator.

Long term energy plan for your property

Hydro rates will continue to rise, there is no getting around this fact. Installing a micro-fit system does 2 things for you. It will allow you to enjoy a stable 20 year investment with a guaranteed rate of return. Secondly, once the 20 year term is up it will off set your hydro bill for the next 20 years.

Just think about how high hydro rates will be in 20 years. 30 years…. Once your micro fit contract expires you will be getting free energy for the next 40 years!

Talk about forward planning!

Financial Planning

Grid connected systems allow you to sell your solar energy or offset your hydro bill. Microfit systems generate a revenue for 20 years. Net-metering systems offset your hydro bill for 40 years.

Times are tight, we get that. It can be difficult to come up with a lump sum payment or add to your already hefty monthly payments. However, when you are purchasing or building a new home you have a golden opportunity to build in the cost of a solar system into your mortgage. The payments on the portion of your net-metered system will work out to be less than your monthly hydro bill.

Who says solar is expensive?? If you are creative, it is cheaper than buying energy off the grid!

A program that works for you.

What Is The MicroFIT Program?

The Ontario government passed the Green Energy and Green Economy Act in May of 2009. Its purpose is to create incentive for all Ontarians to implement renewable energy generation. Now you can become a green energy producer.

You can enjoy a stable investment with an attractive return on investment through a 20 year contract with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).

  • IESO purchases your solar energy at a specified fixed rate for the next 20 years
  • Allows you to off-set or neutralize your utility bills
  • Easily transferable contract if your property or house is sold
  • Enhance the value of your home or business with solar revenue
  • Help Ontario make first steps towards a cleaner and sustainable future

Take advantage of the current rates while they are at their highest!

Variations For Pitched Roof Solar VC Systems

Not all roof lines are the same, so we offer flexible solutions to fit these roofs. An aesthetic install is important to us; we prefer to have as neat an install as possible while meeting our customers goal, therefore we can place solar panels wherever you want.

Shingle Protection

After the solar panels are installed on your roof, they end up covering your existing shingles. This prolongs the life expectancy of your roof. By keeping the majority of the elements off your roof you end up protecting your investment.

Carbon Offsets

Different sized systems compensate for reduced carbon production in a variety of ways. IES has chosen to measure energy produced from solar systems against energy produced by coal plants. A general measurement for carbon reduction is: 1 kW of capacity mounted on your roof will result in 1 tonne of CO2 removed from the environment per year.  As systems sizes increase, so do their carbon offsets.

Mounting Safety

Mounting systems are required to pass specific engineering requirements. All of our suppliers provide engineering documents for their mounting systems, ensuring they can withstand wind and snow loads. During the install process a building permit is required. To satisfy this permit an engineered stamp on the mounting systems is required and provided so the install process is not slowed down.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the optimum mounting angle for solar PV in Southern Ontario?

Finding the proper tilt angle means maximizing summer and winter energy production. The steeper the pitch, the less snow will accumulate on the panels. The flatter the pitch, more energy is harvested in the summer. Optimum pitch is roughly 35 degrees, but going beyond this pitch in either direction does not significantly affect your energy harvest. Mounting solar on any pitch out side of the 25 to 45 degree angles can still be done. However, the system is now outside the normal mounting tilt angles and your system will harvest slightly less energy.

What does this system weigh? Do I need structural engineering?

These systems apply very little weight per square foot. A pitched roof system will apply roughly 2 pounds per square foot, while a ballast mounted system will apply roughly 5 pounds per square foot. Almost all roofs can handle these loads and no structural engineering is required. Special circumstances apply. For instance; older barns, old structures, old roofs which have been neglected.

 Will my roof leak?

Residential customers can rest assured that pitched roof mounting systems have been tested under extreme conditions. Flat roof customers have a range of options, and IES is aware of the cost to repair and replace flat roof applications. IES offers what’s called a ballast mounted system, which do not penetrate the flat roof membranes. Instead, weights are used to hold down the panels and mounting system so they don’t threaten the roofs integrity. The ballast mounted systems have been stamped by an engineer, certifying they will withstand weather conditions in our climate.

Products To Choose From

Panel Sizes

IES can supply different panel sizes; physical size and output size. This allows for choice when sizing a system to either a large or small roof. By using higher output panels, a limited roof size can be maximized to produce power. If space is unlimited, lower output panels can be used to minimize cost.

Micro Inverters

Micro-inverters are mounted behind each panel in a system. They are usually sized slightly larger than the capacity of the panel. They allow each panel to operate as its own system, shade and debris do not significantly affect these types of systems. Micro-inverters can be monitored individually, on a per panel basis. This is a new way of monitoring the performance of the system. If there is an overall drop in performance the system can be inspected panel by panel from your home computer, indicating what is happening with the system. This results in faster system trouble shooting without going up on the roof. If a micro-inverter fails, only that one panel + inverter is affected. The rest of the system continues producing power. Micro-inverters can even email the customer, the installer and the maintenance department with issues regarding a specific inverter.

String Arrays And String Inverters

String arrays are a proven technology that have been implemented across the globe in various climates. Shading, debris and dirt issues can significantly affect the systems energy harvest, and failure of a string inverter results in an entire system failure until it is repaired or replaced. The Christmas tree light analogy is used to describe the performance of these types of systems, if one panel is shaded the whole system is affected. The system is monitored as a whole, not on a per panel basis.

All of the panels IES sell have 25 year power production warranties. If the panel stops producing power or starts losing efficiency faster than factory specs, it is removed and replaced.

String inverters have a warranty of 10 years. The Enphase micro-inverter has a warranty of 25 years, the first of its kind in the industry.
